Calvin Dickey Jr.
Born on September 26, 2005, to Calvin Dickey Sr. and Nicole Dickey, Calvin Leonard Dickey Jr. ,affectionately known as “CJ,” completed their family of four alongside his elder sister, Patrice Dickey. From a young age, CJ showed a natural inclination for sports, beginning with baseball, a passion that would spark an incredible athletic journey.
What started as a childhood hobby soon blossomed into a love for multiple sports. CJ embraced baseball, karate, basketball, and, ultimately, football, where his true passion lay. Football became the foundation for his dreams, and CJ poured his heart into excelling on the field.
CJ was more than just an athlete. As an honor roll student throughout high school, he balanced academics and athletics with remarkable dedication. Nicknamed the “gentle giant,” CJ’s towering presence was matched only by the kindness of his heart. Known for his compassion and zest for life, CJ believed in living each day to the fullest, a philosophy he embodied until his life was tragically cut short.
Growing up in the Dickey household, it was just the four of them: CJ, his parents Calvin Sr. and Nicole, and his older sister, Patrice. CJ shared a close bond with his family, especially with his mother, earning him the title of “momma’s boy.” From a young age, his parents instilled in him strong morals and values, shaping him into the kind, caring, and gentle person everyone admired.
One lesson CJ heard often from his father was, “Do you know how lucky you are?” His parents’ experiences growing up had been challenging—they both worked hard to earn college degrees and secure good jobs, ensuring that their children wouldn’t have to struggle the way they did. These teachings reinforced in CJ the importance of gratitude, perseverance, and the value of education. In the Dickey household, academics always came first.
CJ’s kindness extended beyond his family; he was well-liked by classmates and teachers alike. His caring personality made him a natural friend, and his witty sense of humor occasionally lightened the mood in the classroom. CJ’s passion for sports became evident when he joined the local little league at just five years old. Baseball was his first love, and from the moment he stepped onto the field, his enthusiasm was palpable. With time, his natural talent shone through. However, learning to lose gracefully was a lesson he had to tackle early on. Determined to succeed, CJ turned losses into motivation, using each game as an opportunity to improve and strive for excellence. That resilience and drive would go on to define his approach to both sports and life. CJ excelled academically throughout his school years, earning a place on the honor roll despite facing challenges typical of any student. His strongest subject was mathematics, where he had an extraordinary ability to compute numbers mentally and grasp complex concepts with ease. CJ began his high school journey at Land O’ Lakes High School, attending from freshman through sophomore year. However, as his passion for football deepened, he transitioned to Carrollwood Day School for his junior year, drawn by their renowned football program. Having developed his skills since middle school, CJ took on the role of offensive lineman but frequently showcased his versatility by playing both offense and defense during games. His dedication to the sport and leadership qualities didn’t go unnoticed. In his senior year, CJ was unanimously elected team captain—a significant achievement, especially given that he had joined the team just a year earlier. Balancing sports and academics, CJ maintained a grueling schedule. His days often started as early as 5 a.m. for practice before school, followed by late-night training sessions afterschool. Despite the demanding routine, CJ remained committed to excelling both on the field and in the classroom. Although CJ’s academic journey at Bucknell University was tragically cut short before it began, his high school years stand as a testament to his determination, resilience, and ability to inspire those around him. Sports were a central part of CJ’s life, consuming much of his time and energy. Over the years, he tried his hand at karate, basketball, baseball, and football, each shaping his athletic journey in unique ways. Despite his busy schedule, CJ always made time for what mattered most—his family. For him, family came first, and he cherished moments spent with loved ones. One pastime CJ particularly enjoyed was watching documentaries with his sister, as they both shared a love for history. At home, he often practiced his football stance, blending training with playfulness as he would jokingly fake tackle his sister. His sense of humor, whether intentional or not, earned him the title of the “funny one” in the family. Football Sundays were especially lively in the Dickey household, with CJ and his father passionately yelling at the TV, as though the players could hear their spirited advice. When it came to food, CJ had a special fondness for seafood boils, savoring crabs, oysters, and other shellfish whenever the opportunity arose. His friendships were equally important to him. CJ was well-loved by his classmates and teammates, who often described him as the dependable one—the friend they could always lean on for advice or help. His former coach, Coach Ray, fondly recalled CJ as the “I got you, Coach” kid, always determined to give his best effort and assist others in any way he could. CJ’s unwavering determination, coupled with his caring and humorous nature, left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. CJ was deeply committed to giving back to his community, particularly by mentoring young athletes. He frequently volunteered at youth sports camps, inspiring the next generation to pursue their passions and teaching them the importance of hard work and teamwork. His favorite place to contribute was Trench Academy, where he trained regularly. Often, after completing his own workouts, CJ stayed behind to help younger athletes. This brought him immense joy, and he loved coming home to share stories about how he had supported them and watched their skills grow. At Carrollwood Day School, CJ became an indispensable part of the football team. His leadership as team captain extended far beyond his performance on the field. He cultivated a culture of encouragement, accountability, and perseverance among his teammates, becoming a role model they all looked up to. Known for playing both sides of the game, CJ was determined to give his all in every moment, sometimes even pushing through injuries with incredible resilience. CJ’s role in his family was equally impactful. Affectionately known as the "gentle giant," he brought light and laughter to every family gathering. His father’s wisdom about appreciating life’s blessings resonated deeply with him, shaping CJ into the grounded and kind-hearted person everyone adored. Despite his teenage years, he never hesitated to show affection to his family, especially his sister, whom he hugged daily. Whether in sports, at home, or in his community, CJ’s presence left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. His dedication, warmth, and unwavering determination continue to inspire those who knew him, ensuring his legacy lives on. CJ’s life, though tragically cut short, was one filled with love, passion, and purpose. His boundless dedication to his family, friends, and community served as an enduring testament to the kind of person he was—selfless, caring, and driven. Whether on the football field, helping younger athletes, or simply spending time with loved ones, CJ gave his whole heart to everything he did. His infectious laughter, kind soul, and unwavering determination to live every day to its fullest leave an irreplaceable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. CJ’s legacy is not only in the accomplishments he achieved but in the way he inspired everyone around him to be better, work harder, and care more deeply. While his absence is profoundly felt, the impact of his life continues to shine brightly through the lives he touched and the memories he created.
